Free Presentation: New Homelands Conference
Alastair Clarke has accepted an invitation to speak at the Strangers in New Homelands Conference, organized by the University of Manitoba, School of Social Work. The event will be held from 31 MAY 2023 to 2 JUNE 2023 at the CanadInns Destination Centre in Polo Park, Winnipeg. Here is a description of the conference:
This annual gathering of researchers, academics, and practitioners in the migration and settlement field, dubbed Strangers in New Homelands: Deconstructing and Reconstructing of ‘Home’ among immigrants and refugees in the diaspora launched in 2008.
The conference has run through very critical times in world migration history: the unprecedented displacement and movements of people from their homes into other countries, especially to Europe seeking safety as well as better life conditions. The images of these mass movements are sometimes nerve-wrecking and difficult to watch. These are new forms of diasporic movements in which desperate people are challenging the existing national borders of nation states.
Alastair has agreed to present on the Safe Third Country Agreement and the recent amendments to the legislation. He will be speaking on a panel with Dr Stacey Wilson-Forsberg from Wilfred Laurier University and Louise Simbandumwe, the Co-Director at SEED Winnipeg.
Alastair has been working with immigrant communities for +20 years and he has been practising immigration and refugee law for +15 years in Ontario and Manitoba. Prior to law school, Alastair lived and worked in various countries in Europe, South America and Asia. He has an insatiable curiosity to learn about different cultures and to connect with individuals. Alastair works closely with the team at Clarke Immigration Law to help clients navigate the Canadian immigration system. They assist clients in more than 10 languages and they have won numerous awards for their outstanding service.
