Open Work Permit: Pilot Program for Spouses Extended
Citizenship and Immigration Canada announced today that the successful Pilot Program to allow spouses in the In-Canada Spousal Sponsorship application (SCLPC) to apply for an Open Work Permit (OWP). This highly beneficial and successful program has been extended until 21 December 2016. Clarke Law has assisted many clients over the past year and we commend the government for extending this program.

What is an Open Work Permit?
An Open Work Permit is similar to a regular Work Permit but it allows the foreign national to work anywhere in Canada, within any organization and the processing is done in Canada. All spouses in the Spouse of Common-Law Partner In Canada class may apply for this Open Work Permit. Unlike the usual Work Permit applications that are issued by Visa Offices abroad and other types of Work Permits, the Open Work Permit is free of restrictions and the individual may work anywhere in Canada with any employer. This is a significant benefit for individuals and their families.
How long will your application take?
The total average processing times for Spousal Sponsorship applications in Canada runs 28 months (based on today’s information; undated quarterly). Our clients have consistently expressed frustration in waiting for lengthy periods in Canada, unable to work and contribute to their families. The Open Work Permit gives the spouse the opportunity to work in Canada during the processing of the application.
In our experience, the OWP application may be processed in 2 or 3 months. This allows the spouse to work in any Canadian city while they wait for their Permanent Resident Visa. The applications are processed in Canada and they may be done either online or through a paper application.
