Success: Study Permit Extension After Academic Suspension
International students applying to extend their study permits may face additional scrutiny when their academic history includes a suspension, interruption in studies, or other circumstances that could raise concerns about their continued eligibility as a student in Canada.
In this case, our client faced a difficult situation after receiving a one-year academic suspension. The suspension created potential concerns regarding his academic progress, the interruption in his studies, and his continued eligibility for a study permit extension.
This was the central issue in our client’s case.
ACADEMIC SUSPENSION AND IMMIGRATION CONCERNS
Our client came to Canada as an international student on April 27, 2017. During his academic journey in Canada, he received a one-year academic suspension from May 1, 2025 to April 30, 2026.
A lengthy interruption in studies can create concerns when IRCC assesses a study permit extension application. IRCC may need to understand the circumstances that led to the suspension, the reasons for the interruption in studies, and whether the student continues to have a genuine intention to pursue their education in Canada.
Given the circumstances, it was important that the study permit extension application provide IRCC with a clear and comprehensive explanation of the client’s academic history and the circumstances surrounding his suspension.
LEGAL STRATEGY
Our client consulted Clarke Immigration Law on January 23, 2026 to discuss his immigration options and the potential concerns arising from his academic history.
After reviewing his academic and immigration history, we identified the one-year academic suspension as the primary issue that needed to be addressed in the study permit extension application.
The client subsequently retained our office on June 8, 2026.
As part of the application, we prepared a detailed Statutory Declaration specifically addressing the concerns arising from the academic suspension. The declaration provided IRCC with a clear and chronological explanation of the circumstances surrounding the interruption in the client’s studies and addressed the reasons for the suspension and his plans to continue his education in Canada.
The Statutory Declaration was supported by relevant documentation to provide IRCC with the broader context necessary to properly assess the application.
Rather than leaving the academic suspension unexplained, our application proactively addressed the potential concerns and presented the client’s circumstances in a clear and organized manner.

This case demonstrates the importance of identifying potential concerns before submitting an immigration application and addressing them directly with clear explanations and supporting evidence.
An academic suspension, gap in studies, interruption in education, or other complications in an academic history can raise concerns in a study permit extension application. Applicants should not assume that IRCC will automatically understand the circumstances based solely on their academic records.
A carefully prepared application, including a detailed Statutory Declaration where appropriate, can help provide IRCC with the necessary context and address potential concerns directly.
Every immigration application is assessed individually, and outcomes cannot be guaranteed. If your academic history includes a suspension, gap in studies, or other complications, obtaining professional advice before submitting your study permit extension application can help identify potential risks and determine how they should be addressed.
