Reflecting on 2023
Once again, we celebrate all the work from 2023 and reflect on how the world may change in the year to come. At CIL, we are incredibly thankful and blessed for so many successes and positive decisions. We love helping our clients and we recognize they have put their lives in our hands. We take our work very seriously as we know the importance of each and every file. Before we get to the predictions for 2024, here are a few milestones from 2023:
- Many PGWP applications were approved, including where our client was previously refused and we needed to apply for Restoration. Here is one example. These applications for Work Permits make sure our clients are on the path to PR status and they help the Manitoban economy and the labour market shortage. Here is another example from Oct 2023.
- Many Study Permits were approved – including appeals. We know that going to Federal Court is a big decision. It is costly and long. We do our best to provide the best decision, as fast as possible. Here is one example of a student who is not on track to PR status.
- Spousal Sponsorships can be complex. We try to ensure our clients are reunited with their spouses as quickly as possible. Here is a case from 2023 where we got approval in only 4 MONTHS. Normally, these applications are processed in 10 to 12 months. In another case, we got an approval in 3 MONTHS.
- PRRA applications are notoriously difficult. Here is a case that we won. The facts of this case were unusual and it was a pleasure working with this client. Clearly, his life was at serious risk if he were to return and these risks were not previously considered.
- IAD victory on a Sponsorship appeal for a parent who was trying to come to Canada.
- We received more than 20 positive decisions from the RPD in 2023 for our refugee claimants. These cases are particularly important as we are saving an entire family when we win. Our client is often separated from the family and they are waiting, praying and hoping. Here is a case of a francophone client (we have many) who won his case in July 2023.
- Appeals can be difficult and also rewarding. We have published a guide on how to win Spousal Sponsorhip appeals. Here is an appeal that we won in 2023.
- At times, our clients face removal from Canada based on potential inadmissibility. We deal with many of these cases as well. Here is an Admissitibily Hearing that we won for our client who was found to be Medically Inadmissible per A38. If you read this space, you know that Alastair Clarke and the team at CIL was able to change the laws re A38. Many people were affected by this change.
- Deportation Order cancelled.
- Another type of case that we deal with is when a shady agent messes up. We fix many situations. Here is an example of a shady immigration consultant who messed up a case and we successfully got them back on track.
- We love MPNP. Many people come to Manitoba to take advantage of the MPNP program. We have a special relationship with the MPNP program and we help many people through all the steps.
- Misrepresentation is also a big part of what we do. We have helped hundreds (thousands?) of people who are subject to A40 of IRPA. These cases can be challenging but we firmly believe that, even if someone makes a mistake, they deserve another chance to stay in Canada. For many of these cases, we deal with CBSA Officers. The best possible result is a warning letter.
We bid farewell to 2023. Again, thank you to all our clients who put their trust in our services!
