Feedback from LSO Presentation
As reported, Alastair Clarke delivered a presentation during the Law Society of Ontario’s 6th Mental Health Summit for Legal Professionals. It was a very positive experience. It is not common that a lawyer in Manitoba is invited to speak to members of the LSO. The panel was exceptional and it was a privilege to be a part of this event. Alastair was invited based on his article, Vicarious Trauma, which was published by Slaw, Canada’s online legal magazine.
Following the Summit, we received the following feedback from participants:

In survey responses following the program, many people identified this panel as one of their favourites and many identified you as an effective speaker. We wanted to share with you some of the comments participants made about the discussion:
- The practical tips that were provided throughout the training. I particularly found the panel “Navigating the client relationship: How do we serve our clients while not losing ourselves?” very helpful.
- This was excellent – the relevance of the content and vulnerability of participants made it personal, authentic and engaging.
- The variety of the topics was excellent. The personal experiences of lawyers who have experienced mental health issues was valuable.
- Thank you very much for another excellent presentation on mental health. I look forward to them every spring.
- I was touched by the personal stories told by the speakers. They were vulnerable and generous with sharing their experiences with the audience. It was very relatable.
- Hearing that others were experiencing what I’m experiencing was very eye-opening. I had thought I was alone in this. It also made me aware of what could happen if I don’t take steps to foster better mental health.
- I admire the individuals who come forward to share their previous experiences with mental health issues at this seminar
- It helps so much to hear stories to understand that we are not alone – that others are not all superhuman (or conversely – that I am not alone in feeling overwhelmed etc.)
- The personal stories of the presenters were inspiring and motivated me to be more compassionate towards others
We really appreciate that you took the time to participate in the Summit. With leaders like you, we are breaking the stigma around mental illness and striving to achieve better balance in our lives.
On behalf of CIL, we thank all the participants at the Summit. This was an excellent experience.
